That’s why SRWI has launched a pioneering Community Mental Health & Resilience Program, bringing licensed counselors, trained listeners, and peer-support teams to storm-affected neighborhoods across the Caribbean.
“You can rebuild a home in weeks. But healing the trauma of losing everything? That takes time, and someone willing to listen,” says Melissa Louis, SRWI’s new Director of Psychosocial Care.
Safe Spaces to Speak, Grieve, and Rebuild
Under tents, on school grounds, in local churches, and even roadside, SRWI has set up mental wellness circles where people can:

Talk through their experience with trauma-informed volunteers

Receive referrals to professional care if needed

Access resources on coping, grief, and stress

Reconnect through community storytelling, music, and guided breathing exercises
This is more than therapy—it’s about restoring dignity and reminding each person that they are not alone.
Real Voices, Real Impact
“When the storm passed, I didn’t cry for my roof—I cried for my memories,” says 64-year-old Claudine, who attended one of SRWI’s listening sessions in Grenada. “But after speaking with the team, I slept through the night for the first time in weeks.”
“As a teen, I felt invisible in the response,” says Josiah, 17. “SRWI treated us like we mattered—not just our hunger, but our fear too.”
